Today's construction methods, which include the use of lightweight materials such as wood and gypsum, have made the installation of hard surface coverings particularly challenging. The substrate, whether it is plywood, OSB, concrete, or gypsum-based screed, expands and contracts due to changes in moisture and temperature levels. Likewise, the tile itself expands and contracts in reaction to environmental changes. Unfortunately, the substrate materials and the tile expand at very different rates creating stresses in the assembly that ultimately result in damage to the finished tile surface.
